Manufacturing & Supply Chain
Logistics optimization.
We help life sciences companies optimize their logistics processes—from inbound logistics to final delivery—while complying with GDP requirements and temperature control specifications.
What logistics challenges arise in the life sciences sector?
Pharmaceutical logistics is complex and highly regulated:
- Temperature deviations in the cold chain lead to product losses and compliance risks
- Logistics costs are high due to inefficient route planning, excess inventory, and poor carrier performance
- GDP documentation is incomplete and insufficient for regulatory inspections and GDP audits
- Last-mile logistics for refrigerated products and high-value pharmaceuticals are not adequately secured
Do you have validated shipping processes and excursion management protocols for all of your temperature-sensitive products?
Our services.
We optimize logistics processes from strategy through to packaging validation.
Logistics Strategy & Network Design
Analysis and optimization of the logistics network: locations, carrier selection, warehouse concepts, and distribution strategies. Business-case-based recommendations for network changes.
GDP Compliance & Audit Preparation
Review of GDP documentation and processes against the EU GDP Guidelines. Preparation for GDP regulatory inspections and carrier audits. GDP-compliant SOPs, qualification documents, and document structure.
Cold Chain Management & Validation
Temperature validation of shipping processes: lanes, packaging, and carriers. Excursion management protocols and product-specific stability assessments in the event of temperature deviations.
Carrier Management & Performance Monitoring
Structured carrier qualification system: Auditing logistics service providers against GDP requirements. Carrier KPI tracking, escalation processes, and annual carrier reviews.
Frequently Asked Questions About Logistics Optimization.
What are the GDP requirements for pharmaceutical logistics?
The EU Guidelines on Good Distribution Practice (GDP) set out requirements for the storage, transport, and distribution of medicinal products: temperature controls, security measures, documentation, qualification of transport service providers, and traceability. GDP certification is mandatory for wholesalers and many distributors.
What is the cold chain, and when is temperature mapping necessary?
The cold chain refers to the continuous monitoring of temperature for temperature-sensitive products (e.g., 2–8°C or –20°C). Temperature mapping is the systematic process of verifying whether warehouses, refrigerated vehicles, and shipping containers maintain the specified temperature conditions throughout. It is a prerequisite for GDP qualification.
What happens if the temperature limit is exceeded (temperature excursion)?
A defined excursion management protocol comes into effect: reporting, product evaluation (stability data), assessment of product quality, and a decision regarding suitability for use or disposal. All steps must be documented. GDP-compliant SOPs are essential in this process.
How is a logistics service provider certified as GDP-compliant?
Through a structured qualification process: self-assessment, document review, on-site audit, quality agreement, and regular re-qualification. ENTOURAGE provides support for carrier audit programs and the development of GDP-compliant quality agreements.
